Getting the Most From Your Grant Writing Efforts

Full-day, in-person grant writing workshop will teach participants strategies and skills for writing successful grant applications


Obtaining grants is a process. Getting the Most From Your Grant Writing Efforts will break that process down into workable strategies and provide participants with the knowledge and skills for writing a successful application. The grant-writing and fundraising environment is increasingly competitive. This event will teach you the importance of organization and preparation when writing grants. This is a full-day, in-person event that will outline that process into workable strategies and equip participants with the understanding and skills for writing a successful application.

Moderators

Neal Fogle and Linda Falcone of Penn State Extension will moderate this panel. These extension educators will bring their combined expertise in grant writing, strategic planning, community visioning/development, workforce retention, and more to assist participants in learning how to craft successful grant applications.

ELLEN BURKEY is a Financial Advisor with Ameriprise Financial, and serves as current Vice Chair of the Scranton Area Community Foundation Board of Governors. In her professional capacity, Ellen helps clients make financial decisions, including planning for retirement, estate planning, and selecting appropriate investments to achieve these goals. In this role, Ellen also serves as a teacher, educating her clients about finances, opportunity, and risk.

As a member of the community, Ellen feels it is very important for her to be able to give back, and to help whenever and wherever possible. Ellen has always lived by the philosophy that through hard work, dedication, integrity, and serving others, one will find happiness and fulfillment.


CATHY FITZPATRICK has served as Grants & Scholarship Manager at the Scranton Area Community Foundation for over 10 years. In this role, Cathy has guided grantmaking efforts for SAF and its managed Foundations, including crafting application processes, evaluating applications, and making funding recommendations.

In addition to her work with the Scranton Area Community Foundation, Cathy also serves as the President of the Lackawanna Interagency Council. Cathy is a valuable resource familiar with the thought processes that guide grantmaking decisions.


KENNETH G. OKREPKIE, MS, serves as the Regional Manager for Ben Franklin Technology Partners NEP where he oversees investments in a portfolio of more than 40 companies in Northeastern PA. In the last four years, his clients have leveraged his funding to raise more than $74M. Okrepkie’s career blends a variety of experiences from higher education to the world of the entrepreneur.

During his career, he’s been part of more than $100M in funding opportunities for non-profit organizations. he has served the community as Chair of the Boards for SLIBCO- the Scranton Chamber’s Economic Development arm and Scranton Tomorrow, an organization that is leading the revitalization of downtown Scranton, Great Valley Technology Alliance and the Board of Governors for the Scranton Area Community Foundation. Mr. Okrepkie also is member of the Stourbridge Project Advisory Board, Treasurer for CANDO and chaired the Hazleton based CAN BE Business Incubator along with serving on all seven Business Incubator Boards in the region.


MARYLA PETERS SCRANTON has been an inspiring activist, employee, and volunteer for numerous community, regional, state, and national nonprofit organizations for over 30 years. She has exhibited significant charitable giving in which she provided insightful leadership and an ability to direct by example. Maryla has developed, executed and consulted on comprehensive Annual and Capital campaigns resulting in millions of dollars raised.

Maryla has presented at local, state, and national conferences and has been the recipient of several awards for her professional success, leadership and constant commitment to the financial development and program expansion of nonprofit organizations. She remains committed to securing a better life for the people or our region, particularly children.
