The Civic Engagement Summit hosted by Women in Philanthropy will take place on Thursday, October 6, 2022 (previously scheduled for October 4, 2022) at the Century Club of Scranton (please also note the new location). As we strive to promote inclusivity in all of our work, this new date was selected to be mindful of Yom Kippur Eve, which takes on the evening of October 4th.

You are invited to join us to:
  • Explore critical topics in civic engagement and advocacy.
  • Become equipped with tools and resources to encourage voter participation in your community.
  • Engage in valuable discussions to learn how to inspire others to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
  • Support women and youth in the civic space by providing resources on leadership and advocacy skills.
  • Make civic engagement and advocacy more inclusive in NEPA!

With your help, Women in Philanthropy aims to pave the way for a long-term strategy that addresses the gaps and barriers facing our community’s engagement in voting, civic life, and critical leadership and advocacy skills.

Women in Philanthropy is proud to announce that we have partnered with the National Constitution Center (NCC), a private nonprofit organization in Philadelphia that illuminates constitutional ideals and inspires active citizenship. This partnership will provide Women in Philanthropy with a thorough understanding of government and the importance of civic engagement.

At the Civic Engagement Summit, you will work with local partners, including community organizations, schools, and colleges/universities, to formalize a community-wide program focusing on the Constitution and our democracy. You’ll participate in panel discussions that take a deep dive into what it means to be nonpartisan and explore strategies on how to engage youth in civic education. Additionally, learn the civic needs of the underserved to aid in removing barriers that exist.

What is civic engagement and why is it important?

Civic engagement can look like activism, voting, volunteering, environmentalism, community and national service, running for office, service-learning, and many other activities. When people work to make a difference and are given the tools and resources to develop the knowledge, abilities, and motivation to make that difference, great things can happen to improve the quality of life in their communities. Civic engagement affects not just individuals but also improves entire neighborhoods and impacts societies. Civic engagement is an important part of the democratic process.
