Scholarships

The Scranton Area Community Foundation administers over 50 scholarships. Some of the funds help students from a particular school or area; others provide financial assistance to those pursuing a specific field of study, and some assist students that are most in need. Students interested in one or more of our scholarships can create an account through our online portal to complete an eligibility questionnaire. After completing the eligibility questionnaire, the student will be directed to the scholarship application(s) they qualify for.

Alan B. Cunningham Scholarship

Eligibility:

The Alan B. Cunningham Scholarship Award is named in memory of Alan B. Cunningham, and is intended to support a graduating senior from North Pocono High School who intends to continue into a post-secondary education for business or accounting.

Preference, in the following order, will be to applicants who have direct ancestor who is/was a North Pocono High School graduate from the years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, 2001, and/or 2005; who provide volunteer service, have an extenuating need, such as a financial or other hardship, have strong academic achievement, such as GPA, AP courses, participation in extracurricular activities, and/or employment, have been involved in high school sports including player, score keeper, manager, etc., have been involved in Boy Scouts during high school.

Alexis Caviston-Ashmar Memorial Scholarship Mansfield Nursing Award

Eligibility:

The Alexis Caviston-Ashmar Memorial Scholarship Award is intended to support a permanent resident of Northeastern Pennsylvania in the 3rd or 4th year of the Nursing Program at the Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing – Mansfield Campus. Eligible applicants must be a permanent resident of Northeastern Pennsylvania in the 3rd or 4th year of the Nursing Program at the Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing – Mansfield Campus. Applicant must also provide two (2) Letters of Recommendation from Mansfield Nursing professors and healthcare related work experiences, if available. Learn More about the Scholarship here.

Alexis Caviston-Ashmar Memorial Scranton Knights Rhythm Scholarship

Eligibility:

The Alexis Caviston-Ashmar Memorial Scholarship Award is intended to support a graduating senior from Scranton High School who is a member of the Scranton High School Knight Rhythms and intends to pursue a degree in healthcare. Eligible students must be a graduating senior from Scranton High School; a member of the Scranton High School Knight Rhythms; intending to pursue a degree in the healthcare field. Applicants must also provide two (2) Letters of Recommendation from at least one teacher and one from a supervisor, if the applicant has worked/volunteered. Applicants must also provide an essay about the importance of this scholarship and the role of healthcare providers in a post pandemic world must be submitted. Learn more about the Scholarship here.

American Legion A. Pierson Hurd Academic Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior at Valley View High School. The American Legion A. Pierson Hurd Academic Scholarship is based primarily on NEED with Class Rank and Activities serving in a supportive capacity. Criteria considered: family income, family size, number of children in college, college tuition, grants received, awards received, academic achievement and school, community leadership and activities. The proper forms showing the expected family contribution (EFC) must be included. The guidance counselors at Valley View High School select the recipient.

Angelina Fricchione and Michael Cupple Scholarship Award Fund

Eligibility:

The scholarship will be given to an incoming student who shall be selected by Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. The student will be eligible for the award during all four years of medical education. The student must be a Lackawanna County resident, be interested in pursuing primary care medicine, practicing medicine in Northeastern PA upon graduation, demonstrate financial need, and demonstrate evidence of past leadership in community service and/or service to others.

Ann Wall Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior at Lackawanna Trail High School who is matriculating at a college, university or business school. Preference given to a student who resides in Dalton, who has learning disabilities or special needs and is a participating member of a church or other religious institution. Recipient is selected by Lackawanna Trail High School teachers, counselors or administrative staff.

Anthracite Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior from a Lackawanna or Luzerne County high school or an aspiring student entering into post-secondary education. Preference will be given to a student who (in this order) 1-Plays golf, 2- Works in golf, i.e. pro shop, caddy, cart attendant, etc., 3- Demonstrates leadership skills.

Ashley & Erin Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating Senior at North Pocono High School. Must demonstrate academic achievement and/or be an honor student. Must participate in compassionate service to others, volunteer activities, and/or church/faith related activities. Preference given to students studying veterinary sciences, law/law enforcement, music, or business. The recipient is selected by the North Pocono High School Guidance Department.

Blakely Borough Scholarship Association Fund

Eligibility:

Graduating Senior from Valley View School District. The guidance counselor at Valley View High School selects the student using a formula provided by the Blakely Borough
Scholarship Association on file at the school.

Caroline Ace, LPN/Angela Muchal, LPN Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

The scholarship shall be presented annually to a student matriculating in the practical nursing program at the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County. The recipient is selected by the faculty of the Practical Nursing Program using following general guidelines. Students should demonstrate characteristics of: Academic achievement and/or honor student; Good citizenship/service to others; and Leadership. Financial need is not a stated criterion, but may be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship.

Catherine A. Alu Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Senior students graduating from Dunmore High School who demonstrate academic achievement and/or be an honor student, good citizenship and service to others, leadership
and participation in music training or activities. Financial need is not a stated criterion, but may be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship. The Dunmore High School guidance department selects the recipient.

Chris Moran Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Awarded to a total of four (4) recipients, ideally one male and one female from both Abington Heights High School and Mountain View High School, with a preference for students attending a trade school.

Chris Till Sender Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A Senior student graduating from a Lackawanna County High School attending a school of cosmetology in Lackawanna County. Must demonstrate commitment to his/her profession, community involvement and service to others.

Cinderella’s Closet of NEPA Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Must be a female or female-identified high school senior from Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne or Wyoming counties pursuing a post-secondary school education. Must have 50 or more volunteer hours with a documented non-profit organization in Northeastern Pennsylvania, with preference given to those who have volunteered for Cinderella’s Closet in the past 4 years. GPA of 3.0 or greater required.

Constance M. and Joseph A. Brocavich Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

8th grade student from Lackawanna County attending a Catholic high school. Required to be a Boy or Girl Scout. Must demonstrate financial need. Each student receiving the scholarship has the opportunity to renew the award on an annual basis while matriculating at the Catholic High School in Lackawanna, provided the recipient maintains a B average or higher.

Danielle Faramelli Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

The scholarship will be presented annually to a qualified graduating senior or seniors at Valley View High School for educational expenses at a college or university to pursue a degree in Art. If there is no qualified student pursuing a degree in Art, the scholarship may be presented to a student who is pursuing a degree in business. The recipient(s) are selected by Valley View High School using the following guidelines: demonstrate creativity and uniqueness of style, as well as good citizenship, compassion and service to others; Academic achievement and honor student status or financial need are not stated criteria, but may be considered in selecting a candidate(s) for the scholarship.

David Gallagher Memorial Foundation

Eligibility:

A graduating senior from Abington Heights High School seeking a degree/certification from a college, university or trade school with an interest, skill, or proficiency in art. Financial need is not a stated criterion, and will not be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship. The recipient is selected by Abington Heights High School.

Dr. Bernard Shair Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A Senior Student at University of Scranton who has been accepted and will matriculate at an accredited school of dentistry in the coming school year. The award will be granted to the student who by academic standards, character, high school and college activities, evidences greatest promise for dedicated professionalism, humanitarian concerns, social welfare service, and a quality of leadership exemplified by the late Dr. Shair.

Dr. E. C. LaCoe Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Available to two Students at Abington Heights High School planning on matriculating at secondary or elementary teaching program who demonstrate academic achievement and/or be an honor student along with: good citizenship and service to others, leadership, and evidence of interest in working with youth during their high school career. Recipients are selected by the Abington Heights Senior High School Guidance Department.

Dulcey Degilio Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior from Abington Heights High School active in sports, outgoing, happy, confident, honest, caring, trustworthy and possessing personal integrity. GPA of C or above required. A panel of teachers, guidance counselors and staff of Abington Heights High School will send recommendations to the Scranton Area Community Foundations Scholarship Committee who ultimately choose the recipient.

Edward C. Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A second year student attending a local college or university in performing arts program preparing for a career in the performing arts. Evidence of community involvement and service to others is required. Nominations for recipients are made to the Scranton Area Community Foundation Scholarship Committee.

Felins Family Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Established in December 2021 by Dr. Raymond Felins, the Felins Family Scholarship Fund provides three (3) scholarship awards to graduating seniors from North Pocono High School. The scholarship awards include: 

– Felins Family Tennis Scholarship Award 

– Felins Family Marching Band Scholarship Award

– Felins Family Science Olympiad Scholarship Awards

Fendrock Family Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

In 2009 the Fendrock family began to recognize graduating students of Carbondale Area Jr./Sr. High School (CAHS) with an annual scholarship. That scholarship was endowed in November 2021 with the creation of the Fendrock Family Fund. The Fund will support, via financial awards, graduating CAHS students who pursue post-secondary education. 

The Fund is named for John J. and Cecelia (Stefanides) Fendrock, the six children they raised in their home in Simpson, PA, and their descendants. The formal education of John and Cecelia ended with grade school, but their belief in the importance of lifelong learning is their legacy.

GaryInspiredMe Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

One student from public/private high school in Lackawanna County and one from a public/private high school in Luzerne county. Applicants need to demonstrate academic excellence, good citizenship, participation in an athletic group within school or the community and be an active member of a faith based or religious organization.

Greg Legg NEPA Diamond Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating male high school senior residing in Lackawanna, Luzerne or Wayne County who is playing in a high school baseball program. Preference will be given to a previous/present member of the All-Star team for Lackawanna League or the Wyoming Valley Conference. Must demonstrate academic achievement, leadership skills, and community service. Financial need is not a stated criterion, but may be considered in selecting a candidate.

Harry and Carol Kuzmick Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Established in December 2021 by Carol Kuzmick, the Harry and Carol Kuzmick Scholarship Fund supports students from Northeastern Pennsylvania who are or will be attending accredited colleges and universities.

James F. Swift Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Scholarship available to 20 Graduating Seniors from Lackawanna County High Schools. 75% of the scholarships are to be for students attending local colleges. The recipients of these scholarships have demonstrated academic success, have been committed to community and school activities and have high recommendations from their teachers as having the ability to set realistic and obtainable goals. No more than two recipients per private, public or charter high school will be selected. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance (as determined by the school) in a full-time course of study. Students attending a two-year school and planning to enroll in a four-year school (including four-year schools outside of Lackawanna County) may receive a total of three renewals on the basis of satisfactory academic performance (as determined by the school) and full-time
enrollment.

James M. Akens North Pocono Athletic Trust Fund

Eligibility:

Must be a graduating senior from North Pocono High School with the intention to pursue a college degree. Must have the proven ability to participate at a college level in at least one of the following three sports: basketball, football or baseball. Applicant must have a grade point average in his or her academic school career that shall not be below the average grade point average of his or her class, and said average must have been maintained during his or her entire high school career. A committee comprised of the principal, head football coach, head male and female basketball coaches, head baseball coach and head softball coach shall make the selection from those students who meet the above qualifications.

Jane H. Rushmore Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A student matriculating in practical nursing at the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County who has completed at least one level at the time of his/her selection for the scholarship and shall be enrolled as a student at the Career Technology Center in the Practical Nursing Program when the scholarship is granted. Demonstration of academic achievement, good citizenship/service to others, and leadership. The recipient is selected by the faculty of the Practical Nursing Program using following general guidelines.

Jason Evans Memorial Wrestling Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior from Abington Heights High School who has been a member of the wrestling team and demonstrated leadership. Financial need is not a stated criterion, and will not be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship.

Jefferson Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

These scholarships shall be presented annually to qualified seniors from any high school in Lackawanna County for regular courses of study in a nursing program, or in a related field of study, at a college or university. Applicants are selected on demonstrate academic achievement and/or be an honor student, good citizenship and service to others, leadership and financial need.

Jeffrey Morgan Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A junior at Holy Cross High School planning to attend High Cross High School in their senior year. The recipient is selected by Holy Cross High School among those who submit an essay on “Reading: The Key to Success”

Jennifer Morgan Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior from Pittston Area High School who will be attending an accredited university and will be pursuing a degree in the field of education. The student will be selected by Pittston Area High School teachers, counselors or administrative staff using academic achievement, good citizenship/service to others, and leadership as criteria. Financial need is not a stated criterion, but may be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship.

John & Grace Kreig Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior of Riverside Jr./Sr. High School with an interest in business or medicine. The recipient is selected by Riverside Jr/Sr High School. The academic achievement (40th or 50th percentile), good citizenship and service to others, and leadership. Financial need is not a stated criterion, but may be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship.

John R. and Maureen J. Pesavento All Saints Interparochial Academy Scholarship Fund for Holy Cross High School

Eligibility:

An All Saints Interparochial Academy student who has received the highest grade on the entrance examinations taken prior to admittance to Holy Cross High School and will be matriculating at Holy Cross High School as a freshman.

John R. and Maureen J. Pesavento All Saints Interparochial Academy Scholarship Fund for Scranton Preparatory School

Eligibility:

An All Saints Interparochial Academy student who has received the highest grade on the entrance examinations taken prior to admittance to Scranton Preparatory School and will be matriculating at Scranton Preparatory School as a freshman.

John R. and Maureen J. Pesavento Johnson College Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Maureen Pesavento established this fund in August 2020 to provide a scholarship for a Lackawanna County high school graduate who enrolls as a full time undergraduate student at Johnson College.

John R. and Maureen J. Pesavento Keystone College Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

John R. and Maureen J. Pesavento Penn State Scranton Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Maureen Pesavento established this fund in August 2020 to provide a scholarship for a Lackawanna County high school graduate who enrolls as a full time undergraduate student at Penn State Scranton.

Johnny Rosenstein Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility:

Established in June 2022 to honor the memory of Jonny Rosenstein, the fund awards scholarships to students from Abington Heights High School who participate in soccer.

Eligible students must be a graduating senior that will pursue a post-secondary education; graduating from Abington Heights High School; and a soccer player. Applicants will be required to submit Two (2) recommendation letters (preference that at least one (1) letter of recommendation will be from a current or previous coach) and a very brief essay explaining their love of soccer and why they are a strong candidate for this scholarship award.

Joseph (Firp) and Charles Pacino Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior from Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School who is a Mayfield resident demonstrating academic achievement and/or honor student, good citizenship and service to others, and leadership.

Joseph J. Costa Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A student matriculating at Lackawanna College who demonstrate academic achievement, good citizenship/service to others, and leadership. The recipient must have completed at least one semester at Lackawanna College at the time of his/her selection and is enrolled at Lackawanna College when the scholarship is granted.

Joseph P. McDonald Memorial Fund

Eligibility:

Graduating seniors from Dunmore High School The recipients are chosen by Dunmore High School’s standing graduation awards committee as follows: ½ of the allowable distribution to a student selected from among the top 10% of the senior class, ¼ of the allowable distribution to an outstanding female senior and ¼ of the allowable distribution to an outstanding male student.

Junior League of Scranton Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A female student selected from among nominees recommended by the guidance counselors at Scranton High School and West Scranton High School. Recipient is required to show excellence in volunteer service and good scholarship. The Scranton Area Community Foundation Scholarship Committee chooses the awardee.

Kathleen A Gallagher Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

The fund is named in memory of Kathleen A. Gallagher, sister of the Donor, who was an artist and a graduate of Scranton Central High School. The Kathleen A Gallagher Memorial Scholarship Fund will award a scholarship to an individual graduating from Scranton High School or West Scranton High School who has an interest in pursuing a secondary degree in the arts.

Keisling Family Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A graduating senior from any Lackawanna County High School. The Scranton Area Community Foundation Scholarship committee has been given full discretion on the selection of this recipient.

Lackawanna Audubon Society Scholarship

Eligibility:

Established in June 2022 by the Lackawanna Audubon Society, the purpose of this Fund is to award scholarships to students from Lackawanna or Wyoming County who have an interest in, or who are currently pursuing, a degree or certificate in environmental sciences or a related field.

Eligible students must be a graduating senior that will pursue a post-secondary education, or a currently matriculating student already so enrolled; living in Lackawanna or Wyoming county; and pursuing a degree or certificate in environmental sciences or a related field. Applicants will be required to submit a letter of recommendation and to provide a well-written essay about their interest in environmental sciences and/or environmental issues.

Laura Wesolowski Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

The Laura Wesolowski Scholarship Fund was established in memory of a long-term employee and manager of the McDonald’s in Clarks Summit, PA. The scholarship is intended to annually support an employee of a McDonald’s in the Northeastern Pennsylvania region who is pursuing a post-secondary education.

Lena Orlando Orski Education Scholarship

Eligibility:

The Lena Orlando Orski Education Scholarship Fund will provide a scholarship award each year to support educational expenses for a qualified graduating senior from a high school in Lackawanna County who is matriculating to a college or university and plans to study in the field of education. Applicants will be required to submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or staff of their high school.

Lois Marks Hausman Memorial Fund

Eligibility:

Available to two students from a Lackawanna County high school who are attending Lackawanna College. Those recipients are chosen by the school demonstrate financial need and academic performance.

Martin and Anna Orlando Kopa Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

The Martin and Anna Orlando Kopa Scholarship Fund will provide a scholarship award each year to support educational expenses for a qualified graduating senior from a high school in Lackawanna County who is matriculating to The Pennsylvania State University in Scranton, PA or Johnson College in Scranton, PA. If there are no qualified graduating seniors who plan to attend these educational institutions, then no award will be granted in that year. If both Penn State Scranton and Johnson College dissolve and/or lose their tax exempt status, the award will instead be granted to a student attending a college, university, or trade school based in Lackawanna County.

A graduating senior from West Scranton High School who is attending a college,
university or a higher education institution who demonstrate academic and athletic achievement along with financial need. The recipient shall be in the top 50% of the graduating class.

Midori Yamanouchi-Rynn, Ph.D. Scholarship Fund

Neal J. Fasula Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

Neal J. Fasula Scholarships fund is a scholarship fund at the Scranton Area Community Foundation established on December 30, 2003. The fund was established by the Fasula family and friends to honor Neal Fasula, founder of Gerrity’s Market. Neal cared deeply about his family, his community, and his employees. The Neal J. Fasula scholarship reflects Neal’s desire and his family’s wish to further the educational development of the employees of Gerrity’s Supermarket or Gerrity’s Ace Hardware by providing an annual scholarship to a qualified employee, or the qualified dependent child or stepchild of an employee, of Gerrity’s Supermarkets or Gerrity’s Ace Hardware for educational expenses at a college, university, or trade school. To qualify for this award, a student, or their parents, must have worked at Gerrity’s Supermarket OR Gerrity’s Ace Hardware for a minimum of 750 hours.

Good citizenship and service to others, Desire for education opportunity, Preference will be given to those enrolled in an accredited degree granting institution of higher learning, Minimum of 12 credits per school year. Financial need is not a stated criteria, but may be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship. This scholarship may be renewed for a maximum of 4 years with a 2.5 GPA.

Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation Nursing Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

In 2021 the Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation announced the opening of its Careers in Care Nursing Scholarship application, established through the Scranton Area Community Foundation. This $700,000 competitive nursing scholarship program aims to support the growth and development of the nursing workforce in NEPA. The Careers in Care Nursing Scholarship Program is intended for students who plan to pursue or who are pursuing nursing and who will practice in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

To qualify for a Careers in Care Nursing Scholarship, individuals must show they have had a permanent address in Lackawanna, Luzerne, or Wyoming County for the last three years. Scholarships are available to those interested in obtaining a CNA and entering the healthcare workforce. Scholarships are also for anyone employed in the healthcare field in either Lackawanna, Luzerne, or Wyoming County and looking to advance as an LPN or RN. Additionally, students may apply if they are in their third or fourth year of a four-year nursing degree and looking for financial assistance. ‘Nontraditional’ students or those looking to go back to school to obtain a nursing degree may also apply. A registered nurse looking to obtain a Master’s degree may also qualify for a Careers in Care Nursing Scholarship. Letters of recommendation are required when applying.

Patrick Andrew Luptak Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

One graduating senior from North Pocono School District and Two graduating seniors from any Lackawanna County High School. The students shall have demonstrated the following characteristics: An ambitious, caring student in need who is looking to advance their career through some sort of secondary education; An involvement in school activities; Community involvement and service to others; Active in sports; A grade point average of “C” or better. Financial need is not a stated criteria, but may be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship. Special interests of Science, technology, agriculture or chemistry are not state criteria, but may be considered in selecting a candidate for
the scholarship.

Pay-It-Forward Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A sophomore, junior, or senior student at any Penn State campus who’s permanent residence is in Lackawanna County, PA. Applicants must have a W-2 from employment at either at Penn State through work study or an outside employer and continue working while enrolled as a full time student. A 2.5 GPA or higher is required. Demonstration of activity in or service to the community is preferred but not required. Financial need will be considered. Student should be willing to offer a similar scholarship when he or she is in a position to do so in the future (no
legal commitment is required).

Russell J. O’Malley and James E. O’Brien Memorial Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

A caddie or employee of Country Club of Scranton who is attending a public or private secondary or post-secondary educational institution. Applicants must be nominated by a member of the Scranton Country Club. The recipient shall have demonstrated characteristics of:
Academic achievement and/or honor student; good citizenship and service to others; leadership; and an attitude of co-operation at the Country Club of Scranton. Financial need is not a stated criteria, but may be considered in selecting a candidate for the scholarship.

Scranton Central High School Alumni Scholarship Fund

Eligibility:

This scholarship will be renewable for (4) years to maintain educational support for the student through 4 years of their undergraduate degree, provided the recipient maintains a minimum of a 2.0 GPA. This scholarship will be forfeited if not used within 4 consecutive years. Chosen from graduating seniors at Scranton High School and West Scranton High School attending a college or university who demonstrate good citizenship and community service to others. Preference will be given to a student who has a family member or close connection with someone who attended Scranton Central High School.

Todd Angelo Memorial Scholarship Award Fund

Eligibility:

A Senior Student at University of Scranton who has been accepted and will matriculate at an accredited school of dentistry in the coming school year. The award will be granted to the student who by academic standards, character, high school and college activities, evidences greatest promise for dedicated professionalism, humanitarian concerns, social welfare service, and a quality of leadership.

United One Scholarship Award

Eligibility:

The United One Scholarship Award is intended to support a graduating senior from Lackawanna or Luzerne county who will be pursuing an advanced educational degree. Preference will be given to students who intend to pursue a degree in business or finance, have a demonstrated financial need, and/or who has a strong academic record.
