These sessions provide practical tools, meaningful conversations, and valuable connections for organizations working to create lasting impact in our community.

One of the most common governance challenges is distinguishing between board leadership and staff management. This session explores how boards provide oversight without micromanaging operations, how committees support effective governance, and how to keep board meetings focused on strategy rather than day-to-day tasks.

Maggie Martinelli serves as the Chief Financial and Operating Officer at the Scranton Area Community Foundation, where she plays a pivotal role in advancing the Foundation’s mission to build a strong and vibrant community. Since joining the Foundation in 2016, she helped establish nearly 200 charitable funds and facilitated the distribution of over $40 million in grants and scholarships.


Fundraising Without the Fear: Simple Ways for Board Members to Help Inspire Giving

Fundraising is a shared responsibility of nonprofit leadership, and board members play a vital role as both ambassadors and advocates.

This session explores how board members can contribute to resource development through the 5 Ts of philanthropy—Time, Talent, Treasure, Ties, and Testimony—while also strengthening their ability to communicate the organization’s mission and impact.

Participants will learn practical, approachable ways to support fundraising efforts, build meaningful relationships with donors, and confidently represent their organization. Through simple storytelling techniques and real-world examples, board members will develop skills to effectively share their passion, inspire support, and deepen public engagement.
