Thanks to your generous support,
over $180,000 was raised for Heart of Scranton!
In partnership with Scranton’s Mayor Paige Cognetti, the Scranton Area Community Foundation led a virtual fundraising event addressing food insecurity on Thursday, April 30, 2020, through the NEPA COVID-19 Response Fund. Heart of Scranton: A Virtual Fundraiser to Help our Neighbors brought in a total of over $180,000 from over 385 generous donors in less than 48 hours! 

All donations for this fundraiser went to support CEO/Weinberg Northeast Regional Food BankFriends of the Poor, and Meals on Wheels of NEPA through the NEPA COVID-19 Response Fund.

Philanthropic partners including Moses Taylor Foundation, Geisinger, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, the Scranton Area Community Foundation, and Minooka Subaru, generously matched ALL donations made for this event, dollar for dollar.

Mayor Cognetti hosted an hour-long fundraising event featuring local musicians and special guests that aired on Thursday, April 30, on ECTV Comcast Channel 19 and streamed on ECTV’s YouTube Channel.

“We received an incredible response from the Heart of Scranton: A Virtual Fundraiser to Help our Neighbors,” stated Mayor Cognetti. “We continue to be grateful and inspired by the ways our community is helping each other during this crisis.”

President and CEO of Friends of the Poor Meghan Loftus said in a statement, “We are extremely grateful for the generosity and support we’ve received from our community during this unusual and stressful time. Ours is a city that comes together to care for one another when times get tough, and that has been truly exemplified in the Heart of Scranton virtual fundraiser.”

One hundred percent of all donations (with the exception of credit card fees) went directly to support CEO/Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank, Friends of the Poor, and Meals on Wheels of NEPA, as designated by the donor, through the NEPA COVID-19 Response Fund.

Scranton Area Community Foundation established the NEPA COVID-19 Response Fund in March to rapidly deploy responsive and flexible resources to nonprofit organizations working with those who are impacted by COVID-19 and the related economic, social, and health-related consequences of the outbreak. To date, over $405,000 has been provided to 65 nonprofit organizations serving communities in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and over $1,000,000 has been raised for COVID-19 response efforts.

Donations to the NEPA COVID-19 Response Fund are still being accepted online at https://safdn.org/covid19/ or by check made payable to the Scranton Area Foundation indicating “COVID-19 Fund” in the memo mailed to the Scranton Area Community Foundation, 615 Jefferson Avenue, Suite 102, Scranton, PA 18510.
