Robert H. Spitz Foundation Announces 2020 Grants

The Robert H. Spitz Foundation, administered by the Scranton Area Community Foundation, announces its 2020 grants, awarding a total of $771,000 to 42 nonprofit organizations in Northeastern Pennsylvania. 

The Foundation distributed a total of $771,000 in grants to the following nonprofit organizations: Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Bread Basket of Northeast Pennsylvania, Catherine McAuley Center, Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Scranton, Inc., Dress for Success Lackawanna, Family Service Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Goodwill Industries of Northeastern PA, Junior Achievement of Northeastern PA, Keystone Mission, Lacawac Sanctuary Environmental Education Center, Lackawanna College, Marywood University, NativityMiguel School of Scranton, NEPA Inclusive, Outreach – Center for Community Resources, Scranton Civic Ballet Company, Scranton Lackawanna Human Development Agency, Serving Seniors, Inc., The Arc of Northeastern PA, The University of Scranton, The Wright Center Medical Group, United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Institute for Public Policy, Women’s Resource Center, American Red Cross, Electric City Steel Drum Project, VNA Hospice and Home Health, Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Indraloka Animal Sanctuary, NEPA Animal Welfare Collaborative at the Scranton Area Community Foundation, NEPA Pet Fund and Rescue, North Shore Animal League America, Inc., PAWsitively for the Animals, Quigley’s Shelter Pet’s, Inc., Scranton Animal Shelter Association Incorporation, SPCA of Luzerne County, St. Cats and Dogs of Scranton, Chabad of the Abingtons, Foundation for the Jewish Elderly of Eastern PA, Jewish Family Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Jewish Community Center, and the NEPA COVID-19 Response Fund at the Scranton Area Community Foundation.

The Robert H. Spitz Foundation is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization that supports initiatives and programs serving the residents of Lackawanna County and Northeastern Pennsylvania. Priority areas for funding include supporting programs that aim to break the cycle of poverty, remove economic barriers, and encourage independence in adults and children through access to safe, affordable housing, transportation, education, and other important issues; veterans’ affairs and veteran-oriented programsanimal welfare, including but not limited to programs that support humane education, adoption for homeless animals, spay/neuter, rescue, veterinary care and which help the economically disadvantaged and the elderly to keep their companion animals; and Jewish culture, heritage, and community.


Scranton Area Community Foundation has served as administrator of the Robert H. Spitz Foundation since 2016. The Robert H. Spitz Foundation is a tax-exempt, private foundation and supports initiatives and programs serving the residents of Lackawanna County and Northeastern Pennsylvania. Formed in 2015 through the estate of Mr. Spitz, the Robert H. Spitz Foundation supports an array of projects and programs that improve the Northeastern Pennsylvania region. To date, the Robert H. Spitz Foundation has provided over $2.8 million in funding to the community.
