Scranton, PA–Nine-year-old Matthew McDonnell, a third-grade student at South Abington Elementary School, has battled and defeated a rare form of kidney cancer four times since 2014. Now, he’s on a mission to help others.

Through Matthew’s Hope 4 Miracles, a fund at the Scranton Area Community Foundation, Matthew and his family are on a mission to create awareness about the need for funding for pediatric cancer research and give back to the community by raising funds for local families battling pediatric cancer.
On Saturday, June 1, 2019, Matthew’s Hope 4 Miracles will host their first event–an inaugural 5k Run/Fun Walk at Nay Aug Park in Scranton. The event will feature music, basket raffles, and a visit from Champ of the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders. The 5K Run/Fun Walk will start at 9 a.m. Registration will be from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m.
The Fund will use a portion of the proceeds from the 5k to offset some of the costs other local families incur while their child is undergoing treatment. “We understand how travel expenses, lodging, and lost time at work all contribute to the financial burden on these families. We just want families to know that their community cares,” said Linda McDonnell, Matthew’s mother.
