#PhilanthropyFriday: Foundation Awards a 65th Anniversary Mini-Grant to the Scranton Public Library

This year, during our sapphire anniversary, we honor the loyalty of our donors and the prosperity that their generosity makes possible right here within Northeastern Pennsylvania. In celebration, we’d like to share with you another one of the many inspiring stories we received and announce our third 65th Anniversary Mini-Grant.

This story comes from our friends at the Scranton Public Library, who shared that a recent grant they received from the Scranton Area Community Foundation enabled them to digitize a collection of over fifty original poetry readings from nationally renowned poets—such as Gary Snyder, Robert Bly, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Scranton native W.S. Merwin—that took place in the 1970s through the 1990s in various Scranton locations.

The grant allowed the Scranton Public Library to preserve and make available the poetry readings to anyone in the world, free-of-charge, through the Lackawanna Valley Digital Archives, which was founded and continues to be hosted by the library. The collection also includes images of event posters and interviews with some of the original organizers of the series. Since going live, the poetry videos have received over 25,000 views.

You can view the collection here: http://content.lackawannadigitalarchives.org/cdm/landingpage/collection/fospl

The Scranton Public Library envisions a future in which everyone has free access to a diversity of resources needed to lead productive and fulfilling lives. The library strives to enhance the lives of all individuals by offering free access to materials and programs designed to satisfy the informational and recreational needs of our community.

We are thankful to hear from our friends at the Scranton Public Library for sharing their story, and the impact we have made in the community. In appreciation, we are awarding them a 65th Anniversary Mini-Grant in the amount of $650. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Scranton Public Library.

We’d like to recognize that our work at the Foundation would not be possible if it weren’t for the generosity of our many charitable donors. During our sapphire anniversary year, we’d like to call attention to the loyalty of our donors who make our work possible.

If you’d like to SHARE YOUR STORY with us, we would love to hear it! Simply fill out our form online: SHARE YOUR STORY.

Up to $10,000 will be awarded through the 65th-anniversary mini-grants opportunity, funded by the Scranton Area Community Foundation.
