The Matt McGloin Foundation, established in 2017 by Matt McGloin, supports charitable causes in the Lackawanna County region. Support has included funding to help a child being treated for cancer, providing oral health kits for hundreds of local children and youth, and providing funding to support veterans’ causes. Additionally, the fund awards a scholarship annually to a graduating senior of West Scranton High School.

To date, over $100,000 has been distributed from the Matt McGloin Foundation to support charitable causes across the region. The Scranton Area Community Foundation is grateful to Mr. McGloin for entrusting the Scranton Area Community Foundation to administer the Matt McGloin Foundation.

Work continues on The Garden of Cedar

Work continues on The Garden of Cedar, located at 715 Cedar Avenue, Scranton. The Garden is on its way to becoming a unique public space for residents of South Scranton and the Greater Scranton Area.

Frank Dubas, President of The Garden of Cedar, donated the property and established The Garden of Cedar Capital Fund at the Scranton Area Community Foundation in 2018 to support the creation and development of the notable community garden.

“If the weather holds up, the Garden’s infrastructure will be complete before year-end, and the Garden will be operational by the spring 2023 planting season,” Dubas said.

In December, The Garden was decorated for the holiday season. Curved raised planting beds will serve as boundaries for the maze-like ADA-accessible pathways which will run throughout the property.

The mission of the Garden of Cedar is to provide a unique functional urban community garden/park and children’s discovery area that serves as a statement of space for a neighborhood gathering, as well as a catalyst for better health and wellness. “Come spring, garden plots will be offered to neighborhood residents and organizations at no cost,” said Dubas.
