Annual Report to the Community
A Message from our President and CEO
2018 was an incredible year for charitable giving and growth at the Scranton Area Community Foundation. This year, we proudly welcomed 23 new charitable funds established by philanthropists looking to make an impact on the causes they care about. We are grateful to be entrusted with the honor and responsibility of helping our donors carry out their philanthropic legacies. We take very seriously our role as a steward of charitable funds, a grantmaker, a catalyst for change and growth, and a convener working to seek solutions to challenges facing our communities.
This year, we made strides towards removing transportation barriers that many of our friends and neighbors face on a daily basis. Through our leadership of NEPA Moves, the regional transportation initiative which promotes equitable access to critical services, we worked towards fostering regional economic growth and greater opportunity across Northeastern Pennsylvania. NEPA Moves received praise this year for being a unique, collaborative model not only for the state of Pennsylvania, but as a national model for cross-sector partnerships advancing transit equity, and for that, we are deeply encouraged by the potential that lies ahead.
We are also grateful for the support that has enabled our efforts to strengthen the infrastructure and impact of nonprofit organizations in our communities through our Center for Community Leadership and Nonprofit Excellence. This year, we brought in national experts on topics aimed to enhance our regional nonprofit leaders’ abilities to meet their organizations’ critical missions—from business planning to creating a fundraising culture. We are profoundly committed to building the capacity of nonprofit
organizations and, in turn, the impact of their critical work. We couldn’t do this without the generosity of our donors.
We are also fortunate for the community support shown to the 25 local nonprofit organizations we brought together for our annual NEPA Match Day. Through the Foundation’s leadership on NEPA Match Day, a record amount of over $217,000 in charitable funds was raised—all during a 24-hour period.
Our Women in Philanthropy initiative continues to empower and transform the lives of women and girls and their families across the region. Several thousand students in K-12 public schools have received STEAM education; multiple women-owned businesses have been launched through the microloan program; and thousands of dollars in matching funds have been provided for women developing savings accounts for themselves and their families.
In 2018 and beyond, we are on a mission to enhance the quality of life for all people in the region by helping charitably-minded individuals carry out their philanthropic goals, and by encouraging the sustainability and growth of regional nonprofit organizations. It is only because of your generosity that we can continue to help change lives in our region. We are extremely grateful to you for your support.
