Garden of Cedar Groundbreaking Set for Saturday

10.07.20

Groundbreaking for a notable community garden in South Scranton will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at 11:00 a.m.

The Garden of Cedar, located at 715 Cedar Avenue, Scranton, will host its groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday which will include the planting of an apple tree, the Garden’s symbolic feature, among other highlights. “The Garden of Cedar will be a unique public space that offers a fusion of urban agriculture, trailways, education, and art for residents of South Scranton as well as the Greater Scranton Area,” stated Frank Dubas, President of The Garden of Cedar.

Mr. Dubas established The Garden of Cedar Capital Fund at the Scranton Area Community Foundation in 2018 to support the capital projects needed for the creation and support for the Garden of Cedar in Scranton. During Fall 2020, utilities will be installed and hardscaping is expected to begin. Construction of walkways, raised bed planters, community gathering spaces, and additional features will commence in the spring of 2021. Completion is expected later next year.

The groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public and all are welcome to attend the event at 715 Cedar Avenue, Scranton, on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at 11:00 a.m.
“A signature feature of the Garden will be a maze-like one-way trail allowing visitors to meander safely through the space without congestion (social-distance) as they explore the raised planting beds and educational stations that display culturally significant horticultural aspects of the neighborhood’s diverse residents,” stated Dubas. “We are working with local community organizations, Penn State Extension’s Master Gardener Program, and local government entities to construct a setting that pays homage to the area’s Iron District heritage while, at the same time, looks forward to a future offering hope and promise for healthy living and outdoor recreation,” he added.

The groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public and all are welcome to attend the event at 715 Cedar Avenue, Scranton, on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. Social distancing guidelines are to be maintained.
