Strong boards are intentionally built. This session explores the full board building cycle—from assessing current board composition and identifying future needs to recruiting, onboarding, engaging, evaluating, and transitioning board members. Participants will learn how to move beyond filling vacancies and instead adopt a strategic approach that aligns board talent, diversity, experience, and leadership capacity with the organization’s mission and future goals.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Explain the stages of the board building cycle and how they contribute to long-term board effectiveness.
• Assess current board composition and identify gaps in skills, experiences, perspectives, and community representation.
• Develop a strategic recruitment plan aligned with organizational priorities and future leadership needs.
