A strong relationship between a nonprofit board and its Executive Director is essential to an organization’s success. This session will explore the key elements of a healthy board–Executive Director partnership, including the distinct roles of governance and management, effective communication practices, shared accountability, executive evaluation, and leadership succession planning.
Participants will discuss common challenges, learn practical strategies for building trust and collaboration, and gain tools to help boards provide meaningful support while maintaining appropriate oversight.
Participants will learn how to:
- Define the roles of the board, board chair, and Executive Director.
Differentiate between governance and day-to-day management responsibilities.
Build stronger communication and working relationships between board and staff leadership.
Navigate common board–Executive Director challenges.
Support effective Executive Director evaluation and development.
Prepare for leadership transitions through succession planning.
