Announcing the 2020 Award Recipients
We are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2020 Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Award and the 2020 Roseann Smith Alperin Award and invite you to attend a virtual event to honor and celebrate them!
Please join us virtually on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at 5:30 p.m. for our Women in Philanthropy Annual Event, where we will present the 2020 Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Award and the 2020 Roseann Smith Alperin Award to two outstanding community women.
The 2020 Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Award recipient is Mary-Pat Ward.
Mary-Pat Ward is the Deputy Director of the Office of Economic and Community Development (OECD) for the City of Scranton. Before her time with the City, she was the legal assistant for over eight years at the Barbara J. Hart Justice Center, the legal project of the Women’s Resource Center Scranton. Until her time with OECD, she served on the Executive Board of the Catherine McAuley Center of Scranton. In 2005, Ward found herself homeless while trying to care for her toddler daughter, Isabella. She utilized the services of the McAuley Center and other public service agencies which allowed her to finish school and start her career. In 2016, she and Isabella established Izzy’s Sweets Bake Sale Fund, a project which seeks to give back to the community that raised them up in their time of need. She currently serves on the steering committees for both West Scranton and Pinebrook revitalization projects and she just concluded the University of Scranton, Kania School of Management, Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program. She resides in Scranton with her husband Doug and daughter Isabella.
The Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Award is presented annually to a woman whose vision, dedication, and courage have enhanced the quality of life and expanded the opportunities for the people within her community. Established in 1992, by the family of Margaretta Belin Chamberlin, each recipient of the Award displays community-mindedness, demonstrates leadership, and exemplifies a similar passion and persistence as Margaretta Belin Chamberlin.
Linda Robeson is the oldest of five children, the wife of Captain James Robeson who was killed in the line of duty as a Scranton firefighter, and is the proud mother of Ryan Robeson who lives in York, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Mary-Christine, and daughters, Lucia and Arianna.
Robeson serves as an active volunteer serving in various communities including a role with the Family to Family Program Friends of the Poor Food Basket Program in Scranton, an ambassador to the St. Luke Foundation for Haiti, and through the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, corresponding with those who have lost a firefighter in the line of duty. She has also served as the past president for St. Joseph’s Center Auxiliary, assisting with the Festival, auction, and chicken dinner fundraisers. She currently serves on the board at St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen and Friends of the Poor. Robeson has been involved with the Friends of the Poor COVID-19 Emergency Food Distributions in the region which has served approximately 23,000 families since it began in March.
The Roseann Smith Alperin Award was established by the Junior League of Scranton to recognize an outstanding female volunteer who exhibits the heart and spirit of Roseann Smith Alperin by demonstrating the capacity to lead, motivate, and inspire others and the community she serves. The Roseann Smith Alperin Award honors an area woman who has the capacity to encourage others to make more of themselves and the community they serve.
The Scranton Area Community Foundation manages many charitable funds that provide awards to individuals who possess qualities that donors would like to recognize.
During the Women in Philanthropy Annual Event on October 22, 2020, we will proudly honor the recipients of the Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Award and the Roseann Smith Alperin Award. Both awards are provided from charitable funds that were established to memorialize a loved one and to honor qualities of excellence that exist in members of our community.
